Morgan himself was treated for inhalation of smoke issues and cuts and let out of a medical clinic by midmorning. The whole first floor was scorched by the fire, which evidently began in the family room and spread rapidly through the down the stairs of the two-story home.

David was admitted at Torrance Memorial Medical Center with severe singeing in more than 70% of his body. The Topper family had leased the house for four or five months, when the fire hazard happened. Even today, David feels shaken when he thinks about the incident. In a recent statement to the media, he said that he is indebted to God and the timely action of his elder son Morgan that helped them escape from certain death on that fateful day in 1996.
